This book should interest any who ponder how human existence can hold meaning and purpose in a disrupted cosmos. The primary aim is to encourage the development of Christian faith both as a channel of insight into present realities and as a bastion of hope for the future. Part I, especially relevant to those readers who lack a church background, outlines the essentials of personal salvation through belief in Jesus Christ and his message, the Gospel or 'Good News'. Part II describes the outworking of the faith that comes with assurance of salvation through Jesus. Ways are shown in which his Spirit can lead to personal maturity through growth in faith, hope for the future, self-denying love for others and an active prayer life. Fruit of this maturity are considered, including insights into coping with suffering. Outreach to others through evangelism and the church is outlined, including a section on presenting 'revelation'. The book ends with a glimpse of future challenges. |

A Prayer for the Downcast The Lord loves you; of this please be sure. For you heard his knock and opened the door. He heard you pray, your faults are forgiven. He sees you radiant, ready for heaven. Worship him in the beauty of holiness, Know that he revels in your loveliness. |
A Reflection upon Revelation - by Gordon Stokes 8/3/14 & revised 20/7/22 Though we have your Word; where is Your face? Lord, abide with me in this earthly place. I know full well that You ask no merit; Please hold my hand, infuse Your Spirit. Above this globe do You not hover? Have You not always been my lover! Cleansing my thought-life layer by layer and ready to hear my whispered prayer. Were I in heaven, there would You be surrounded by angels on bended knee. Redeemed I could approach Your throne Nevermore needy or struggling alone. But this present realm is no sad mischance; does not Your love spring from every branch? Did not Your hand guide Rembrandt's mark, your grandest designs resound through Bach? Should we not seek to find You here throughout our days upon this sphere; shedding adversity, relinquishing strife and rejoicing e'en now in eternal life! |

Venerable Terrance Dein, Sydney: ''Faith Revisited' will be of interest to anyone seeking a basic understanding of the Christian faith. The author systematically presents essential biblical truths and comments upon them helping the reader to grasp their significance. A feature of the book is the personal anecdotes, stories and reflections demonstrating the author's long and wide experience as a medical doctor and convinced Christian. This personal touch adds interest to a valuable introduction to the Christian faith'. Rev Dr Roger Chilton, retiring rector of St Swithun's Church, Sydney: 'I enjoyed reading Gordon's book and think it is a welcome addition to any new Christian's reading. However, I believe Faith Revisited should be put in the hands of every thoughtful seeker as the author clearly sets out the essential doctrines of Christianity. This book is engaging and challenging and Gordon is to be commended for making the great truths of Christianity very accessible, embellished from his own rich and varied experience of faith in Christ.' Dr Ernest Crocker, NSW State Chair Christian Medical and Dental Fellowship of Australia, Sydney: 'Found it to be a most helpful little book, especially at present when confusion and disinformation exists amongst some Christians, much of it evolving from poor understanding of the elements of our faith. Gordon returns us to our first love, even Jesus, providing a clear understanding of the essentials of salvation in Christ, and of the outworking of faith in our daily lives. This book answers questions raised by those seeking salvation, and examines the role of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in our personal lives as we address many of the big issues facing us today'. Professor John Walker-Smith, London: 'A beautiful account of the liberal evangelical view of the faith. I like your academic and intellectual style interrupted by very simple sometimes moving "stories" of experiences of your own, in a conversational style. You have wisely avoided most of the divisive controversies that can separate Christians from one another.' |
